He was born in New Orleans on March 3, 1901, to the late James Phillipe Briant and Rose Simon Briant. He was the father to the late Capt. George H. Briant; and brother to the late Walter, Lassaline, Hamilton, Gabriel, Ferdinand, James, Rose and Pearl Briant. George was a World War I veteran with the U.S. Army's 76th Field Artillery and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Covington. He was a former member of St. Louis Cathedral, St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Peter's Catholic Church in Covington. He is survived by two nieces, Claire Briant Lowery and Marcelle Briant Maurin; and a godchild and caregiver, Irma Koerin Smith of Ponchatoula. Visitation will be at St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, Covington, from 12:30 p.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, celebrated by the Rev. Justin Abbot. Burial in church cemetery, under the direction of Schoen Funeral Home, Covington, (985) 892-2424. In lieu of the usual remembrances, Masses preferred or memorials may be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Covington. On July 20, 2005, George and Germaine Briant would have celebrated their 84th anniversary. On July 20, 2003, the Catholic Diocese of Louisiana recognized them as the oldest living married couple in Louisiana, wherein they received special recognition from Gov. Mike Foster. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 2/2/2005 BRIANT, GERMAINE THIBODEAUX Germaine Thibodeaux Briant, 101, of Hammond, formerly of New Orleans, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the Belle Maison Nursing Home. She was born in Parks on Sept. 4, 1903, to the late Martin and Corrine Thibodeaux. She was mother to the late Capt. George H. Briant, and sister to the late Lucy Nicoll, Clarence and Claude Thibodeaux, Lazzaire Thibodeaux, Beulah Chauffe, Inez Patron, Martina Cormier and Evelyn Broussard. She is survived by a godchild and caregiver, Irma Koerin Smith of Ponchatoula. Mrs. Briant was an oblate of St. Benedict, affiliated with St. Joseph Abbey for more than 50 years. She was a volunteer for many years at Charity Hospital, member of the Legion of Mary and Altar Society at St. Louis Cathedral and a promoter of the Sacred Heart League, the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart at St. Louis Cathedral, the Apostleship of Prayer, Holy Hour to the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy of God devotion. She was a member of Christian Doctrine Visitor in the Homes and Ladies Sodality at St. Peter and Paul Parish. She was a former member of St. Louis Cathedral and St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Peter's Catholic Church in Covington.
