He retired from Southeastern Louisiana University after serving 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Bridgewater of Hammond; four daughters, Joyce Gaten, Barbara Raddler and Vanda Burton, all of Hammond, and Margaret F. Bridgewater of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; two sons, James Bridgewater of Hammond and Alvin Bridgewater Jr. of Benton Harbor, Michigan; three sisters, Geraldine Finley, Mary Ann Bridgewater and Brenda Burches, all of Hammond; one brother, Joseph Bridgewater of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Valentine Bridgewater; a daughter, Sheila Bridgewater Payne; and one sister, Christine B. Washington. Visitation will be Wednesday at N.A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, from noon until 4 p.m. The wake and funeral service will be at 7 p.m. at the Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Hammond. Before living in Hammond, Mrs. Bridgewater was a resident of Plaquemine, where she was active in her community. Mary Dean, as she was affectionately called, never met a stranger and shared her wonderful life with her family, friends and her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. Mary Dean was a shining example of God's love, which she showed throughout her 41-year marriage to Leroy Bridgewater. God blessed Mary Dean with one son, Leroy Kevin Francis Bridgewater, whom she loved and molded into a Christian man. Her pride and joy in recent years had been her grandsons, Christian Francis Williams Bridgewater and Chase Francis Williams Bridgewater. As anyone will attest, she never tired of regaling everyone with stories about their latest antics. She will be missed by her loving husband, Leroy Bridgewater of Hammond; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Dr. Michelle Bridgewater, Birmingham, Ala.; grandsons, Christian and Chase, both of Birmingham; six sisters, Earnestine and husband Herman Oliver of Plaquemine, Odester and husband Carlton Harris of Addis, Patsy Lou Kelly and husband Shelton of Houston; and Earthley Batiste, Albertha Hastings and Evangeline Davis, all of White Castle; two brothers, Dudley Jr. and wife Margurite Davis of Baton Rouge and Van John and wife Renell Davis of Plaquemine; brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law, Richard and wife Vertell Bridgewater, Jacksonville, Fla., Earl Bridgewater, Plaquemine, Robert and Janice Bridgewater, Los Angeles, Pearlean Osborne, Ethel Ponson and Gloria Brooks, all of Plaquemine; a godson, Herman Derrod Oliver, Plaquemine; a goddaughter, Tameka Brooks, Plaquemine; and a host of other relatives and friends. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 9/11/2011 BRIDGEWATER, ROBERT SIDNEY Robert Sidney Bridgewater, 64, also known as "Bob," "Bobby," "The Bob," "Dad," "Grand Dad" and "Uncle Bob," passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 9:15 a.m. in his home after a long struggle with Lyme Disease and a valiant 5-year battle against cancer. A devoted husband of 41 years, father and grandfather, he was born Sept. 11, 1946, in Jersey City, N.J., at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital. He was the eldest of three brothers and spent his teenage years in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He attended Manasquan High School in Manasquan, N.J., where he was a football quarterback and infielder baseball player. He was a quarterback at Sioux Falls College, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Saint Mary of the Plains, Dodge City, Kan., before deciding to work full time. He worked for Proctor & Gamble in Tunkhannock, Pa., and Albany, Ga., before moving to Baton Rouge in 1976 and joining BASF Corp., from which he retired as a supervisor. He was a volunteer firefighter and fire chief, a certified first responder, and a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine tanker man. Founder of the Bandana Divers Underwater Travelers and certified NAUI and PADI Divemaster, he was an international scuba diver who enjoyed diving exotic sites around the world: his favorite destination was Coco View Resort in Roatan, Honduras. Fishing, golf, tennis, barbecuing, racquetball, photography, music, dancing and carpentry were some of the many hobbies he enjoyed. His greatest achievements were his daughters and his greatest disappointment was that he didn't get to scuba dive into his 80s. Robert Bridgewater was loved by his family and many friends and lived a full life of family, work and travels. He is survived by his wife, Suzanna Cassano Bridgewater, Baton Rouge; daughter and son-in-law, Allison Cortney Bridgewater Toups and Lawrence Phillip Toups IV, Kentwood; daughter, Kimberly Robin Bridgewater, New Zealand; grandsons, Samuel William Bourgeois and Lawrence "Phillip" Toups V, Kentwood; uncle, Albert Bridgewater, Virginia; aunt, Clara Ackerman, Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Gary Richard and Gwen Eitmann Bridgewater, Gonzales; brother and sister-in-law, Louis A and Jo Ann C. Cassano, Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.; cousins, Claire Zauner, Marion J. Berger and George Ackerman, all of Virginia, and Carol Formisano, Seacaucus, N.J.; nephews, William Joseph Cassano, Eric Cassano and Damon Cassano, all of Point Pleasant Beach, Eric Sidney Bridgewater and Cory James Bridgewater, both of Baton Rouge; nieces, Michelle Lewis and Laura Cassano, both of Point Pleasant; and many close friends.
