She was born February 21, 1920 in Lismore, LA and was 92 years of age. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwestern Louisiana University in 1942, worked as a Rural Sociologist for LSU Ag Center in Baton Rouge and later taught high school until her retirement. She was known as "The Flower Lady" and received numerous Garden of the Month awards. Smythe and husband, Jimmy, Jay E. Helms and wife, Rosemary, Dennis Lee Brock and wife, Gretchen, Leslie P. Clifton and husband, Bubba, Cristalle Brock, Amanda P. He was retired from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture, Office of Forestry, a firefighter and a towerman. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church, Holden. He is survived by his wife, Kay Caroline McDonald Brock of Livingston; one daughter, Bonita Kay Brock of Livingston; one son, Kevin Dale Brock of Livingston; two sisters, JoAnn Stewart and Clovette Stafford, both of Denham Springs; four grandchildren; and one great- grandchild. She was a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and owner of the Toptoe Dance Ware in Baton Rouge. She is survived by three daughters, Dru Brock and husband Tommy Lea and Leah Beth Brock and husband Bill Veck, all of Baton Rouge, and Julie Brock, of Persimmion Hill, Miss.; five grand- children, April Veck St. Pierre, Lenzie Veck Ringe, Calli Louise Veck Azar, Maggie Seals and Patrick Hampton Lea; and three great-grandchildren, Aliye Ringe, Brayden Ringe and Addison St. Pierre. "Jim" Erbesti and proud Granny of Alexandra and Adrienne Erbesti. She left this world on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, to meet her beloved husband of 53 years, William J. Brock, who preceded her in death in December 2000. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8:30 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, Harvey, the West Bank of New Orleans. Burial in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery, Chackbay. Sylvia was born in Ponchatoula on Oct. 26, 1922, daughter of the late John Louis and Jeanne Nicholas Borne. She was the sister of John Stanley Borne and the late Richard "Dickie" Borne. A true Cajun, she lived in Chackbay as a child, moved to New Orleans as a young woman, and resided in Gretna for 40 years. At nearly 85, she passed away in Richmond, Va., where she resided since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Aunt Sib is fondly remembered for her love of entertaining family and friends. She was an accomplished cook, gardener and seamstress. Reading and traveling were always an important part of her life, only surpassed by an enjoyment of her family and pets.
