Ed passed away on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Hammond. He was a member of the U. S. Merchant Marines, having served during World War II. He was the oldest full time employee of U-Haul in the nation when he retired at age 89. He was recognized at mid field during a New Orleans Saints home game as a Peoples Health Champion for his post Katrina efforts. Catchings Funeral Home, McComb, is in charge. *************************************************************************** From a clipping from an unidentified Amite newspaper dated March, 1942 BROWN, IRENE HODGES Funeral At Catholic Church Monday For Mrs. Irene Brown Claimed by Death at Hotel Dieu in New Orleans After Long Illness - Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Hodges Brown were held at the St. Helena Catholic church here at 9:00 Monday. A large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives were in attendance and quantities of lovely flowers paid tribute to this fine Christian character. Pall bearers were: Messrs. Fred Kopfler, Joseph Currier, Rudolph Miller, Bill Corkern, S.M. Kilpatrick and Creed Ritchie. Interment was in the Amite cemetery. The Rev. Father McGlynn conducted the rites, and McKneely Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Brown was claimed by death at Hotel Dieu in New Orleans at 8:00 p.m. Saturday. She had been ill for several months, under treatment at Independence and New Orleans hospitals where the best of medical attention failed to conquer the painful malady from which she suffered so patiently. She has spent most of her life in Amite. She was born July 24, 1899, a daughter of the late John T. Hodges and Mrs. Hodges of Amite, a member of one of Amite's prominent families. She is survived by her husband, Stanford Brown, three sons, Maurice, Francis and J. T. Brown, her mother Mrs. J. T.
