Armada Butler, 79, the pastor of Nazareth Baptist Church in Woodhaven, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. A native of White Castle and resident of Ponchatoula, he was a World War II veteran and a retired maintenance worker at North Oaks Medical Center, having worked in various jobs there. Instrumental in religious, civic and educational advancements for black residents of this community, he was one of the original members of the Tangipahoa Parish Voters League and helped to gain voting rights and equal educational and employment opportunities for black citizens. He ran an upholstery shop while attending seminary to receive a doctor of theology. Though inactive in recent years due to his failing health, he had been a member of Amite River Progressive Christian Association, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 46, the Oak Grove Lodge 117 Prince Hall Masons Knights Templar. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Butler of Ponchatoula; three sisters, Louise Deponde of New Orleans, Dorothy Mae Kelly of White Castle and Lillie Mae Knight of Dallas; one brother, Westley Julian of White Castle; one grandchild and seven great-grandchildren.
