Dionisus Vincent Cacioppo, M.D., F.A.C.S., a retired surgeon, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at his home in Baton Rouge. Dr. Cacioppo was 88. Affectionately known as Nece, he was born in Bayou Ramos and was reared in Hammond. He received bachelor of science and doctor of medicine degrees from LSU, where he was valedictorian of the 1942 medical school graduating class. Following graduation, Dr. Cacioppo served his country in World War II as a captain in the U.S. Army, stationed at a surgical hospital west of London. At his discharge, he was promoted to major and then completed his surgical residency at the Veterans Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Cacioppo was a surgeon in Baton Rouge for 39 years and was dedicated to the welfare of his patients. Dr. Cacioppo was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a former medical director of the Burn Unit at Baton Rouge General Medical Center and was an active member of the American Burn Association. Dr. Cacioppo served as an emeritus board member of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. He was chief of staff at the Baton Rouge General and Our Lady of the Lake hospitals. He also served as visiting assistant professor of medicine at the LSU Medical School. Dr. Cacioppo retired from his surgical practice in 1988 and was recognized by the Baton Rouge Surgical Association for his service to the Baton Rouge community. Dr. Cacioppo is survived by his wife, Juanita Goudeau Cacioppo; his children, Annette Smith and husband, the Rev. Rodney Smith, Christine Sutton and husband, Robert Sutton Jr., Dennis Cacioppo and wife, Mary Finn Cacioppo, Paul Cacioppo and wife, Melanie Haase Cacioppo, and Julie Cacioppo. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Claire and Rob Sutton, Juliet Waldrop, Sarah Palmer, Anne and Vincent Cacioppo, Rachel, Camille and Laura Cacioppo, and Joy Cacioppo; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1.
