Ponchatoula -- Former Stafford Furniture store manager Leonard J. "Red" Caldwell, 84, died at his home Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. He was a native of Ponchatoula and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Orris Wild Caldwell; two daughters, Jean Linton Brooks of Picayune, Miss., and Alice Caldwell Jones of Benton, Ark.; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren. Mrs. Caldwell was a member of St. Joseph Altar Society, a charter member of Westward Ho, a home demonstration club, and was well known for her volunteer work. She worked at various jobs during her lifetime, including ship welding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, during WWII, telephone operator in New Orleans, and Chicago, Illinois, and as a waitress in Bohning's Cafe and Cave Tangi in Ponchatoula. She was loved, and will be missed, by all her friends and family. She is survived by: two daughters, Jean Linton Brooks and her husband, William L., Sr., Picayune, Mississippi, and Alice Caldwell Jones and her husband, Roger, Benton, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Zeke Jones and wife, Amanda, Cody Jones and his fiance, Leigha Floyd, all of Benton, Arkansas, William L. Brooks, Jr. and his wife, Deborah, Ponchatoula, Timothy J. Brooks and wife, Shannon, Des Allemands, Louisiana, Wendy M. McKenzie and her husband, Derek, Pearl River, Louisiana, and John W. Brooks and his wife, Judith, Prairieville, Louisiana; one sister, Marilyn Wild Smith, Johnson City, Tennessee; and fifteen great-grandchildren and fifteen great-great-grandchildren.
