She was 99. A native of Sandersville, Miss., she had lived in Covington for the past 79 years. Survivors include her children, Mary Louise West of Hammond, Betty Ruth Esquinance of Mandeville, Clarence L. Callihan of Lake Charles, and Douglas E. Callihan of Richardson, Texas. She was a sister of the late Clarence and Cecile Ward, Eva Alexaander and Lola Johnson. She had 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington. The funeral will be at noon in the funeral home chapel, followed by burial in Covington No. 1 Cemetery. She was 91. Born April 12, 1916 in Loranger, LA, she was the daughter of Fred and Beulah Thompson. Out of eight brothers and sisters, she is survived by one sister, Lela Schilling of Ponchatoula, LA. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, JoAnn Thompson of Fresno, CA. Mrs. Callihan grew up in Loranger, LA and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana College in Hammond, LA as a teacher. She was preceded in death by her first husband of thirty-six years, Dr. Donald C. Martin of Huntington, WV, and by her second husband of nineteen years, Dr. A. Dixon Callihan, of Oak Ridge, TN and The Pines, Davidson, NC. Survivors include two daughters: Dr. Virginia Dalton, Tucson, AZ and Nancy Chikes and her husband Peter, Concord, NC; and four grandchildren: Lisa Chikes Ostema and her husband Larry, Concord, NC; Jennifer Chikes, Los Angeles, CA; Pete Chikes and his wife Lindsay, Durham, NC; and Paul Chikes, New York City, NY; and one great-grandchild, Charlotte Jennifer Ostema. Mrs. Callihan enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, traveling, and dancing. She loved children and for many years was a teacher and director of the pre-school at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church and then St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Huntington, WV. In Huntington, she was also active in her church, First Presbyterian, and several clubs including Faculty Wives Club of Marshall University, Huntington Woman's Club, and the Cotillion Club. When she was older, she attended Elderhostels and traveled widely by train in the U.S. and Europe. We will always cherish her sense of humor and her many gifts of kindness. She truly was a Southern belle. The family wishes to thank The Pines' staff for their many years of care and friendship. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC with visitation following the service.
