Calmes died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Saint Joseph Hospice in Baton Rouge. He was 72 and a native of Hammond. Coach Calmes was a graduate of, and played football at, Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, where he was a two-time small college All-American and inducted into the SLU Athletic Hall of Fame. He received a master's degree in education from LSU in 1968. After teaching and coaching at Hammond High School, Baton Rouge High and Glen Oaks in the 1960s and '70s, he became the first athletic director and head football coach at Tara High in 1970. He then moved to the college ranks as both head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Nicholls State University from 1972-1980. After returning to coach football at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1980, he ended his coaching career there in 1983. He spent the last 12 years working in the Juvenile Intervention Program with the 21st Judicial District Attorney's Office helping troubled kids. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Joiner-Calmes; two sons, Tim and his wife Anne Lagattuta- Calmes, and Terry and his wife, Christina Eldridge-Calmes; five grand- children, Grayson, Brit, Bradley, Holly and Robert; a younger brother, Jim Calmes and his wife, Norma; and a sister, Linda Calmes-Lester. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Fulda Calmes; mother, Ella Galender-Calmes; infant twin granddaughters; and a sister, Mary Calmes- Talley. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, coach, friend and dedicated church member and community activist. He was active in the return of football to SLU, a longtime board member of the Tangipahoa Louisiana Farm Bureau, and a deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hammond. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, church and community.
