She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Thornton Cappel, Jr., and her son, Thornton "Chip" Cappel, III. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including James Goodwin, III of Panama City, Florida, Fatie Johnston of Lindsay, LA, and Lindon Cantrell of Lynchburg, VA. Growing up in Hammond and New Orleans, Grace moved to Baton Rouge in her adult years, where she worked for a time at the State Times Morning Advocate as advertising secretary to Pete Goldsby. Leaving that shortly after marriage, she turned to volunteer activities, including leading a troop of Girl Scouts, volunteering as a parent at Westdale Elementary and Catholic High, and volunteering for many years at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. She also was active as a member of the Isaac Monet chapter of The Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, as well as Circle 6 of the Women in Ministry at First Presbyterian Church. Grace enjoyed life a lot, including belonging to the "Bayou Brigade" and later "The Revelers" dance clubs, as well as dining and creating fine cuisine using flavors from all over the world. She was preceded in death by her mother, Daisy Ward Goodwin, father, James Milton Goodwin, two brothers, Charles Goodwin and James Goodwin, Jr., a sister, Fatie Alexander Simmons, and a niece, Barbara Goodwin Saucier. Visitation will be Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the Dunham Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity.
