With a song in his heart, a twinkle still in his eye and great joy in his soul, our beloved "Peanut" jitterbugged his way to heaven late Saturday afternoon, May 21, 2005. We know God smiled because his prodigal son was home. Peanut, a native of Baton Rouge, was born Thomas Franklin Carpenter Jr. on July 12, 1933, and at the age of 71 succumbed to cancer at his daughter's home, surrounded by his family. This vibrant father and loyal friend was a U.S. Navy veteran, an active member of the Baton Rouge Fraternal Order of Eagles AERIE 1083 and a resident inspector for 16 years at PEC. "Tommy" will be greatly missed on the job as he could always get the job done like no one else. Peanut allowed his family and friends to share his life with him even to the end. He laughed some, cried a little, rejoiced in the Lord and then tapped his toes to the rhythm of the music he loved so much. He never met a stranger and his kindness and sense of humor was a gift he shared with his family and friends that we will always treasure. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Franklin and Gladys Mary Page Carpenter; a brother, Larry Eldon Carpenter; and his former wife, Evelyn "Tutty" Carpenter. He is survived by three daughters, Kim Brown of Baton Rouge and her daughters, McKenzie Lee, Kamryn McLain and Kirby Jaye, Kelly Carpenter of Lake Charles and her sons, U.S. Navy airman Cody Michael Gilbert and Cade Evan Brown, and Karen Carpenter of Livingston; a son, Kurt Brandon Carpenter of Denham Springs; three sisters, Johnette "Patsy" Murray and husband John of Central, JoAnne McClendon and husband Jesse of Amite, and Jerrianne Cullinan and husband Tom of Metairie; nephews, Larry Michael Carpenter and Larry Logan Murray and wife Lisa, all of Baton Rouge, Jesse Bryan McClendon and wife Karen of Amite and Keith Miller of Metairie; nieces, Patti Jo Murray Devall and husband Gary of Central, Judge Page McClendon Anderson and husband David of Mandeville and Juli Miller Hart and husband G.J. of Louisville, Ky.; and his very special friend and dance partner, Mary "Black" Tanner of Baton Rouge. Visitation was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 23. Graveside service officiated by Pastor Mark Martin at Blackwater Methodist Church Cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 24. The family would like to extend their very special and heartfelt thanks to the nurses of the fifth floor oncology unit at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, all the angels of Generations Hospice of Denham Springs and the many friends and family for their support, prayers and visits during his last days. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star: 12/5/2008 CARPENTER, VIOLET BAILLIO Violet Baillio Carpenter was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on December 29, 1909. Vi passed away on the third day of December of 2008. Her life was an inspiration to many as she was a woman that everyone admired, a devout Christian, living the Christian way. There is a vacancy that no one will be able to fill. She was the youngest of three children born to Minnie Belle and John Joseph Baillio. Vi graduated from Louisiana College in Pineville (with no grade under an A) at the age of 16. She had taught lower elementary in church school and decided to get her teaching certificate. She graduated from Louisiana State Normal, recognized as a teacher training institute and then taught in Rapides Parish for seven years and in Tangipahoa Parish for eleven years. In 1926 she married Ralph Lionel Carpenter, the man of her dreams, and moved to Port Arthur, Texas. When Ralph entered the Navy, she moved in with her parents in Alexandria. During the WWII, she worked in the Finance Department of Livingston Air Force Base. At the end of the war, Ralph went to work for Billups Petroleum and the family moved to New Orleans and later to Hammond. Dr. Marvin Sansberry was serving as minister at First Christian Church and Ralph and Vi joined the church at that time. Vi taught in Bible School and later, under the tutelage of Mrs. Fay Reimers, served as Sunday School Superintendent and later as Education chairperson. She remained active until age 96 in CWF acting as the reporter for the church bulletin. When her daughter and family moved to Europe she enjoyed several trips overseas, visiting the continent as well. Ralph and Vi's fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in London at the Ritz as well as in Tenby, Wales. An outstanding memory was spending a week in the Cumberland District of English poets and in Italy. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Frankhouser and son, Ralph Carpenter, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie Belle and John Joseph Baillio; her husband, Ralph L. Carpenter; sister, Velva Spencer and brother, Carl Baillio.
