Coach Cave taught and coached in the Long Beach Schools for 33 years after receiving his master's degree in Marine Biology from SLU. He coached all sports but his great love was baseball and he won several championships. Coach Cave was an inspiration to many students that he taught and coached over the years. He was president of the Gulf Coast Camellia Association and a member of the American Camellia Society and a judge of camellia shows. He loved growing and grafting his blooms, winning many awards at different shows around the country. Coach was a board member for the Louisiana Wild Fowl Carvers Collectors and Guild. He won many blue ribbons for his wild fowl carving and songbirds and 1st place at the world exhibits in Maryland for several of his works. He loved the outdoors, fishing with his buddies, deer hunting and snow skiing in Colorado. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved to teach them different things. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Blanks, Dr. Tilley, Dr. Grow and Memorial Hospice staff for their care and compassion during his illness. Also special thanks to Steven Sherwood, his stepson for his personal care and attention he gave to his step dad. Also to Sherry Hard for all those days she gave Mrs. Cave respite and to all our friends for their time, care and compassion. Coach Cave was preceded in death by his grandparents and by his father, John Cave. His survivors include his loving wife, Martine Cave of Pass Christian, son, Christopher Brian Cave( Joanne) of Navarre, Fla., mother, Virgin Cave, of Ponchatoula, LA; step sons, Daren Sherwood (April) of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Steven Sherwood of Pass Christian, 2 brothers, David Cave and Mark Cave (Jan) both of Hammond, La; stepbrother, John Cave, of Louisiana; grandchildren, Dalton Sherwood, Jackson, Jaden and Jett Cave, Corbin, Sebastion and Samuel Sherwood. Friends may call on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Commission Road in Long Beach from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home chapel.
