March 25, 1914- December 28, 2009. Herbert, one of five children, was born on March 25, 1914, in a small village, near the city of Toisan, in Guangdong Province, China. Herbert passed away at the Hammond home of his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Joe Wong. Herbert was pre-deceased in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Teresa Chan, his older brother Bill, and his two younger brothers, Quay and Foo. Herbert Sr. is survived by his sons Herbert Jr. "Chuck", (Wife Doris), William "Bill", (Wife Rita), daughter Susan, (Husband Joe), granddaughters Jessica Wong and Yvonne Chan, and grandsons Joseph Wong and MichaelChan. Herbert is also survived by his younger sister Alice, (Husband Peter Yee), from Canada, and many nieces and nephews from many cities in both the United States and Canada. Herbert was brought to the U.S. by our late Grandfather, Chan Kwan Lao, in 1927, when he was 13 years of age. As with his older brother Bill, Herbert was sent to boarding school in Duluth, Minnesota. By the time he reached College, Dad was able to read and write in both Cantonese and English, and speak in both languages fluently, without a trace of an accent in either language. After earning his B.S. Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Dad worked for a couple of fixed wing aircraft companies prior to WWII. During a visit to the International House in New York City, Dad met his future wife, Teresa. After their marriage on September 19, 1942, Dad and Mom settled in San Francisco, Ca.during WWII, where Dad became the Vice-President of China Aircraft in South San Francisco, where parts were manufactured for placement on U.S. B-26 medium range Bombers. In the early 1950's, Dad started his own plastic research company, PANELCRAFT, in San Francisco. Dad loved to fish, had season tickets for the 49ers at the old Kezar Stadium, and before Susan was born, took his sons to see Pro Football and Baseball games. Dad instilled in all of us, an interest to partipate in sports as well as academic achievement. This interest has been carried on by grand daughter Jessica, and grandson Joseph. Dad and Mom moved permanently to Hammond a little over 12 years ago. They made friends here and enjoyed attending the many Wong Family Functions as well as the varied Community Events in and around Hammond and other surrounding areas, including New Orleans. Susan and Joe did a wonderful job of arranging for all of Dad's healthcare needs. They were ably assisted by a very caring Staff as well the help of Jessica and Joseph. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in Herbert's name, to be sent to the: North Oaks Hospice, P.O. Box 2668, Hammond, La. 70404 or Southeastern Alumni Association, 500 West University, Hammond Louisiana, 70401.
