He was 96, born Jan. 9, 1911, in Centreville to Matt and Addie Gumby Chance. He was a cattleman and farmer. Mr. Chance served on board the destroyer USS Turner during World War II. He had been a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 50 years before transferring to Berwick Baptist Church, where he was a member at the time of his death. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Evelyn McIntosh of Greenwood, Miss.; a great-grandniece, Kay Davis of Greenwood; a great-grandnephew, Ted McIntosh of Greenwood; special extended family members and caregivers, Robert D. and Janie Thomas of Zachary; two grandchildren, Chris Thomas of Hammond and Todd Thomas of Zachary; five great-grandchildren; and sitters and caregivers, Betty Nettles, Winnie McCauley, Eula Taylor, Peggy Caston, Virginia Forbes, Elvia Hughes and Joyce Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Mary Stone Chance; three brothers, Tommy, Oliver and David McIntosh; and two sisters, Jennie McIntosh Chance and Ella McIntosh Steel. Visitation will be at Brown Funeral Home, Gloster, Miss., on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Joe Jackson and the Rev. Alvin Hall. Interment in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
