Billy G. Cherry, 79, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 6:20 a.m. at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was born in Newark, N.J., and a resident of Springfield. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of Electrical Workers Local 995. Survivors include his wife, Jane R. Cherry; niece, Denise Cother and husband Loren; two nephews, Adrian Heintjes and wife Michelle, and Roger White and wife Cindy; and two sisters-in-law, Gloria Heintjes and Bertha Camunez. Preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Georgia Cherry; and sister, Maxine White. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday in the chapel from 10 a.m. until service at noon. He was a native of Indianapolis and grew up in St. Vincent Orphanage in Vincenes, Ind. He served as a U.S. Marine from 1941 to 1946. He was a part- time security guard for Griffin Industries. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Cherry of Holden; five sons, Charles Jason and Christopher James Cherry, both of Holden, Carl, Vic and Jim Cherry, all of Oregon; four daughters, Carla and Connie Cherry, both of Holden, and Theresa and Sharon Cherry of Oregon; one brother, Morris Cherry of Indiana; and two grand- children. Immediate services were held at his home Saturday morning followed by a veteran's prayer at the American Legion Hall Saturday afternoon.
