He was 94, born June 4, 1911, in Oklahoma, and served his country as a Navy hospital corpsman in the South Pacific during World War II. He moved to Louisiana in 1951 to attend LSU Graduate School of Social Work and lived in Hammond since 1955. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katherine Lee Clark; daughters, Pam Bushnell and Lisa Whichard; son, Roger Clark; son-in-law, Steve Bushnell; and his "favorite daughter-in-law," Renie Clark. He also is survived by his eight grandchildren and their families: Scott Bushnell and Edwin Fontenez, Megan Bushnell and Laura Florence and their children, Wylie and Mavis, Beau and Vanessa Clark and their children, Will and Julia, Erin Kate Bushnell, Katie Tape and her husband, Nathan Tape, Joe Whichard and his son, Blake, Matthew Whichard and Corey Whichard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Clark and Mary Mansker Clark; and brothers, Charles, Tom and Albert. His retirement as professor emeritus from the special education department at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1977, after 22 years of teaching, was the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He wrote, "My philosophy is to help other people help themselves. This is the main purpose of being here. We should enjoy life and enjoy our families. We should respect others and accept all races and creeds." After retirement, he was able to live his philosophy by doing volunteer work and he received recognition and awards from the March of Dimes, Hammond City Club, Hammond First Five, Hospice, Junior Auxiliary, AARP, Golden Age Club, Tax Counseling Program, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Literacy Program and the American Heart Association. He also compiled a history of the First United Methodist Church in Hammond. In 1996, he was selected as a torchbearer for the Olympics in Atlanta. He instilled in his children the value that helping others is a sacred duty. He was known as "Mr. Bill" to his friends and as "Poppy" to his family. He was an amazing person -- warm, gentle and kind. We will miss him but we know that he leaves this Earth because God needs a helping hand. Interment will be private.
