DIED: December 27, 1968 Hammond- A prominent Hammond woman was killed instantly Friday afternoon when her car collided head-on with a large tank truck 3 _ miles east of Hammond near the intersection of U.S. 190 and the River Road. Mrs. Delores L. Compton, the wife of Fred Compton, vice- resident of the Guaranty Bank and Trust Co. of Hammond died instantly in the 3:35 p.m. accident. She was 40 years old. Her body was pinned in the twisted wreckage of the car for some time until a wrecker could be used to free her. Dr. Charles Genovese, the Tangipahoa Coroner, pronounced her dead at the scene. According to the investigating State Police officers the accident occurred when Mrs. Compton "crossed the center line into the east bound lane directly in front of the truck." The impact was so great that the front wheels of the truck were broken from their mounts and forced back several feet. The diesel fuel tank on the truck was ruptured by the impact and approximately 75 gallons of fuel was spilled on the road. Two witnesses said that the car just veered into the opposite lane and that there was no other car that she could have been passing. A small fire erupted immediately after the accident, but the truck driver and his helper extinguished it. The driver of the truck, James A. Smith of Deer Park, Tex. was not injured. The truck was owned by the Chemical Leaman Tank Lines of Houston, Tex. The car was wedged under the front of the truck and was pushed backwards more than 250 feet. The wreckage came to rest on the opposite shoulder of the road with the road blocked. Traffic on U.S. 190 was snarled for several hours after while the wreckage was being removed and sand was spread to soak up the spilled fuel. Funeral services for Mrs. Compton were held today at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond with burial in Greenlawn Mausoleum. Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She is survived by her husband, Fred E. Compton Jr.; her mother, Mrs. Reva T. Luxich, Gulfport; four sons, Michael, Stephen, Kerry and Timothy Compton, all of Hammond, three sisters, Mrs. James V. Dennis Sr., DeLisle, Miss., Mrs. Troy Sheffield, Gulfport, and Mrs. Earl Hamilton, Slidell.
