Funeral services were held Sunday. Mr. Conrad was well known in Hawarden, having lived here for a number of years. He was city marshal for several years and also ran the electric light plant for a time. He moved to Hammond, Louisiana some ten or twelve years ago. He is survived by his wife and several children. [Note: the transcription includes a misspelling from the original article.] [The following obituary was published in the "Hawarden Independent" (Hawarden, Iowa) on 22 Feb 1917, pg. 1, Vol. 39, No. 44] S. S. Conrad, one of the pioneer residents of this city, died last week at his home in Hammond, La. The mere fact of his death and that he was buried there Sunday was conveyed to Hawarden friends in a communication received Wednesday from his son, John Conrad, who went to Louisiana last week in response to a message stating that his father was very low. The deceased was a familiar figure in Calliope and Hawarden for many years. He came to Calliope in the late 70's and served as nightwatch and marshal in Calliope and later in Hawarden for many years. During the last few years of his residence here he was employed in the electric light plant. He moved to Louisiana about ten years ago and has been employed there as engineer in a saw mill. Before coming to Sioux county Mr. Conrad was deputy sheriff and later sheriff of Johnson county, Iowa. This was forty years or more ago. He was also deputy sheriff of Sioux county at one time. He was of a kind and genial disposition, ! generous to a fault, and his wide circle of old friends here will learn of hi demise with sincere regret. Besides his wife he is survived by a large family of children. *************************************************************************** File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/tangipahoa/obits/obitssur/conrad.txt
