"POP" Pop, 82, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at SLTAC in Hammond. Pop was a native of Greensburg and resident of Independence. He was a truck driver until a trucking accident shortened his career. It was then that he answered his calling to minister through bluegrass gospel singing. Pop and Lula "Mom" Cooksey, his wife of 58 years, founded the Cooksey Family Bluegrass Gospel Singers Band and were also members of Magnolia Bluegrass Association. They received many awards as well as the honor of being inducted in the Bluegrass Hall of fame. He was a member of Faith Apostolic Church, Holden. He leaves behind his wife, Nell Cooksey; two daughters, Linda Hudson and husband D.L. and Mary Catherine Carrier and husband Junior; his son, Butch Cooksey and wife Charlene; a sister, Ruby King; his brother, Earlie Edward "DiDi"; four grandchildren, Carla Diane Cooksey, Floyd Norman Cooksey, David Joseph Carrier and Jessie Lee Moore; numerous great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Pop in death were his father and mother, Willbuck and Willie Mae Cooksey; his wife, Mom Cooksey; two brothers and two sisters. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the religious service at Faith Apostolic Church, 26660 James Chapel Road N., Holden, La. 70744, on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m., with visiting hours beginning on Monday, Dec. 26, at 6 p.m. Service conducted by the Rev. Marlin Arceneaux, the Rev. David Cutrer, the Rev. Marvin Wilson and the Rev. Ed Hall. Burial will follow in Twin Pines Cemetery, Holden. Thompson Funeral Home of Hammond. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 5/11/2008 COOKSEY, LEONA WILSON "MAMA" She was the most precious wife, devoted mother, loving grandmother, great-grandmother and best friend anyone could ever have. At 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2008, "Mama" Cooksey, a licensed Pentecostal minister, became an angel in heaven at the age of 75. She was a native of Toone, Tenn., and resided in Baton Rouge for 30 years before moving to Independence. "Mama" Cooksey was well-known as being the lead guitar player for the Cooksey Family Gospel Singers. Being the First Lady of Bluegrass music for Louisiana, she was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. "Mama" Cooksey was a member of the Faith Apostolic Church and she lived the life she professed. She is survived by the love of her life for 58 years, L.J. Cooksey Sr., Independence; a son, L.J. "Butch" Cooksey Jr. and his wife, Charlene, Independence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and D.L. Hudson Jr., of Holden, and Cathy and Junior Carrier, of Independence. "Mama" Cooksey is also survived by a sister-in-law, Audrey Wilson, of Central; numerous nieces and nephews; eight cherished grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Seven sisters, six brothers and several nieces and nephews preceded her in death. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the Faith Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Holden on Monday, May 12, at 10 a.m. with visitation beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. Conducting the religious services will be the Rev. Marlin Arceneaux assisted by the Rev. Marvin Wilson and Sister Margie Sullivan. Interment will be in Twin Pines Cemetery.
