Walter H. Corkern, Ph.D., professor emeritus of chemistry at Southeastern Louisiana University, died at his home on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at 1:40 p.m. He was 64, born in Franklinton on March 28, 1939, and was raised there. After earning a bachelor's degree at LSU, he attended the University of Arkansas, where he earned his doctorate in chemistry. He eventually returned to Hammond, where he spent the next 37 years teaching chemistry at SLU and retired in 2003 due to illness. Despite his many accomplishments, his greatest gift to us was his everlasting devotion to God, which was evident in the way he taught chemistry, the smile he showed when lending a helping hand (even to strangers), the Christian values he brought to the family he raised, the faith he displayed when dealing with the recent devastating losses of loved ones, and, lastly, the courage and determination with which he approached the cancer that eventually took him from us. No matter how adverse the circumstances, he always bowed his head, gave thanks, and to the very end, continued living his life so others saw Christ in him. As a Christian, a father, a teacher, a relative and a friend, he truly gave us more than we could have ever given him and, for that, we will always love and thank him. He is survived by Linda Monk Corkern, his wife of 44 years; his children, Michele and Stephen Corkern; his brother, Henry Earl Corkern; sisters, Barbara Corkern Ray and Doris Corkern Hyde; and his grandchildren, Jamie, Jordan, Kaitlyn and Cole. He was preceded in death by his parents, Colbert and Rubye Givens Corkern; and his son, Jeffrey Corkern. Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond. Visitation Tuesday at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m. Burial in Fisher Methodist Church Cemetery, Richardson. Memorial donations may be made to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 7/25/2007 CORKERN, WILLIAM LEWIS William Lewis Corkern, 28 years old of Tickfaw, Louisiana, died Sunday, July 22, 2007.
