Mrs. Crook was born in Boulder, Colorado and resided in Hammond. She was the beloved wife of Chester E. Crook; mother of Randy A. Johnson, Dannette J. Chappell, Robin L. Vonaspern, Rhonda C. Pentney, and Liza A. Brown; also survived by 10 grandchildren and nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Mrs. Crook was the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Juliet DuPont Varos; and sister of the late Edward R. Varos and the late David E. Varos. Visitation on Saturday, March 12 after 9 am until 10:45 am at Geisler Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponchatoula. Interment will follow in Restlawn Park Cemetery, Avondale. He was born June 23, 1914, in Hammond, and was preceded in death by his son, William DeWitt Crook; parents, George William and Grace Gould Crook; brother, Dana Crook; two sisters, Zola Weems and Dorothy Schexnayder; and nephew, Byard Weems. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lillian Coker Crook; two cousins, Jean Kidder, Slidell, and Maxine Shannon, Springfield, Mo.; niece, Beth Sellars, Meridian, Miss.; two foster daughters, Jo Ann Bailey, Jal, N.M., and Amelia Marie Haley Ladner, Ethel; and special friend, Maureen Bankston. Mr. Crook was a longtime employee of Ethyl Corp. beginning in 1937, when the founding company was DuPont. He started as a cost accountant and retired as comptroller of the visqueen department. He was a veteran of World War II and was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, surviving internment at Bad Org, Germany, and was active in POW survivor groups. An active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1962, he was also interested in the organization of new churches in the area, among them Calvary Christian Church in the early 1940s. Hubert was a fine singer and was active in choirs whenever he could. He served as chairman of the board at the church and he and his wife were honored as Family of the Year in 1976. Visiting at First Christian Church, 8484 Old Hammond Highway, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Michael Kurunus. Crook, 43, died last Friday in his sleep on a crew boat of the Texas Company, near Venice. Funeral services were held Sunday from Thomas Funeral Home; interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. He was born and reared in Hammond; served in the Army in Word War II. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mabel Crook; one sister, Miss Vivian Crook of Hammond; one brother, Melvin of Little Rock, Ark.; his widow, Mrs. Violet Crook of Cropsey, Ill.; one daughter, Vickie, 11; one son, Johnny, 9. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers, Warner, John, Holiday, Flim and Willie Fleming; and a sister, Mae Fleming. The Rev.
