Anna G. D'Anna was born March 29, 1915 in Smithfield, La. She was the 7th of 11 children born to Maria A. Lucido and Leonardo Giovingo. Shortly after Anna was born, the family moved to Independence, La., where Anna graduated from high school and lived most of her life. Anna and Joseph A. D'Anna were married in July of 1936. They lived in Chicago, Ill. from 1937 to 1943 but returned to Independence prior to Joe's entering the army during World War II. Anna worked outside of the home most of her adult life, including about 35 years at Amite Building and Supply, where she managed the business's daily office functions. In 1980, she had the distinction of becoming the first female elected as a council member in Independence. Anna moved to Los Alamos, NM in 1997 to be near her family. She had been living in Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation facility in Los Alamos for about a year when she died. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking and baking. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and by all her siblings: Mary (John) Catalano, Frank Giovingo (the first, who died as a youth), Nellie (Anthony) Gates, Leonarda Giovingo, Leah (Vincent) Pendola, Jennie Giovingo, Rose (Nick) Vaccaro, Lena (George) Thomas, Frank (Rose Costa) Giovingo, and Margaret (Bennie) Cucchiara. She is survived by her son Joseph, Jr. and his wife Lee; granddaughter, Collette (Scott) Chamberlain, and Collette's sons, Leo Dudziak and David Chamberlain; grandson, Joseph D'Anna, III (Cathy Crane), and his twin daughters, Ashley and Samantha; a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Independence, LA from 10 a.m. until Mass begins at 11 a.m. Anna will be entombed with her late husband, Joe, in the Garden Memorial Mausoleum of Colonial Cemetery. A memorial mass will be offered, later, in Los Alamos, NM.
