Sister Mary Beatrice Daviet, O.P., age 94 and in her 76th year of religious profession, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 12:53 p.m. at Kindred Hospital. Sister was born Alice Beatrice Daviet in Larose, daughter of the late Louis Etienne Daviet and Alice Guidroz Daviet; and sister of the late Dr. Leslie L. Daviet. She is survived by two brothers, Claude E. Daviet and wife Helen and Louis E. Daviet Jr. and wife Julie; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She received bachelor's degrees from St. Mary's Dominican College and from Loyola University of the South and a master's degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., each with an English major. On May 27, 1928, she professed her religious vows. Sister Mary Beatrice taught at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Orleans, Mater Dolorosa in Independence (two years at each), St. Mary's Dominican High School (eight years), and St. Mary's Dominican College (41 years), where she chaired the English Department for many years. During this tenure, an Advanced Placement College Freshman English Program for gifted local high school students was inaugurated. Sister Mary Beatrice added honors courses to the English Department curriculum and assisted the librarian building an excellent collection of scholarly and literary books and journals. In 1959, she achieved the rank of professor of English. In the meantime, she became a charter member of Dominican's chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma National Catholic Scholastic Honor Society, and served as advisor to the chapter members for 18 years. She chaired the college's Humanities Division for two years and served as a member and secretary on the college Board of Trustees. Sister Mary Beatrice was a recipient of the Dominican Student Government Association's "Outstanding Teacher Award," and at the May 19, 1984, Dominican College commencement was awarded the title of "Professor Emerita of English." After college retirement, she was appointed executive director of alumnae relations and in 1986 received the alumnae's "Dominican Torchbearer Award." Sister Mary Beatrice retired from her alumnae position in December 1994. At the time of her death, she resided at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, where her ministry was "to contemplate and proclaim the Word" through prayer. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse chapel, 580 Broadway St., New Orleans, on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. Interment in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery in Rosaryville, Ponchatoula. A prayer service was held Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at 4:45 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse chapel. Visitation was 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and will be after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
