He was born in Jefferson Parish on Monday, July 16, 1923, son of the late Leon Peter Despeaux and Pearl Mae Davis Despeaux. Mr. Despeaux was a retired Production Foreman with Shell Oil. He was a Boatswain's Mate 1st Class in the Navy during World War II, landed on Omaha Beach on 'D-Day' and served in th Pacific Theatre. Survivors include his daughter & son-in-law, Karen Ann Despeaux and Junior Callais, son & daughter-in-law, R. John "Johnny" and Kimberly Despeaux, Jr., sister, Naomi "Tutty" Buras, brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Judy Despeaux, sister-in-law, Lilian Hebert, brother-in-law and sister-in- law, Clarence "Buddy" and Anna Rose Bacas, grandchildren, Mari Ann and Suzette Callais, Rhett, Rachel, Lauren, and Victoria Despeaux; great- grandchildren, Lindsey, Callie and Emily Hines and Rylan Despeaux. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernedette Bacas Despeaux; and a sister-in-law, Rita Tarter. His memberships include: V. F. W., Knights of Columbus and American Legion in Ponchatoula. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula, from 8:30 until 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. John Sims, O.P., Celebrant. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, Gretna, Louisiana at 3:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation - 16013 Halbert Rd. - Hammond, LA 70403 or St. Joseph's School - 175 N. 8th St. - Ponchatoula, LA 70454.
