After graduation, she entered the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and remaining until 1978. However, her love of the Sisters and her belief in Catholic education did not wane. She graduated from St. Mary's Dominican College in 1970, receiving a bachelor of arts degree with a major in English and a minor in education. She completed her master's degree with a major in guidance and a minor in psychology at LSU in 1974, and then completed plus 30 graduate hours in 1981.
