Co-owner of St. Gabriel Valve Service Inc. in St. Gabriel and a resident of Slaughter, he died at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. He was 55 and a native of Kentwood. Visiting at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and after noon Friday. Religious services at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. George Haile, assisted by Dr. Wayne Barnes. Interment in Feliciana Rest Cemetery, Slaughter. Survived by wife of 33 years, Peggy Hall Downs, Slaughter; a daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Danny Warren, St. Gabriel; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brent E. Downs and Brad and Cindy Downs, all of Baton Rouge; four sisters, Joyce Schram, Slaughter, Ann McCully, McComb, Miss., Christine Saragusa, Independence, and Donna Sue Goff, Magnolia, Miss.; two brothers, Donald E. Downs, Baton Rouge, and Johnny E. Downs, St. Francisville; eight grand- children, Haley and Madelyn Downs, Jordan, Bradley and Thomas Downs, Daniel, Stephen and Katelyn Warren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, J.C. and Marie Downs. Pallbearers will be Mark Leto, James and Lee Downs, Rusty McCulley, Barry, Brent and Mike Causey and Derek Boyd. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Downs, Harry Gardner, Jerry Boyd and Ira Gene Causey. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Zachary. Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel J. Downs will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Life Tabernacle Church, 9323 Hooper Road, Baton Rouge, with the Rev. Tony Spell and the Rev. Sammy Williamson officiating. Graveside service will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, in Turkey Creek Cemetery under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Oakdale. Mrs. Downs, 88, entered eternal rest on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. Mabel, a native of Turkey Creek, was born Oct. 13, 1922. She was a retired state employee, resident of Baton Rouge and member of Life Tabernacle Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by all. She was preceded in death by husband, Taylor H. Downs; daughter, Marilyn Gay McDaniel; and grandson, Roy L. McDaniel Jr. Those left to mourn her loss and cherish her memory include two sons, James A. Downs and his wife, Betty, of Covington, Ga., and Lynn A. Downs and his wife, Melanie, of Hammond; two grandsons, Todd M. McDaniel, of Prairieville, and Stuart D. Downs, of Covington, Ga.; three great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.
