She was born on Dec. 26, 1920, to Ulysse O. and Ida Waguespack Dufresne. She was a 1937 graduate of Edgard High School and was president of her senior class. Ms. Dufresne was a 1942 graduate of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing and enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps in 1943. She was a first lieutenant with the 40th General Hospital, stationed prior to D-Day, June 6, 1944, in England. After the invasion, she was stationed in Le Vesinet, France. After the war, Ms. Dufresne continued her nursing career at Sewickley Valley Hospital in Sewickley, Pa., Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, ultimately retiring from The St. Charles Hospital in Luling in 1983. Ms. Dufresne cared lovingly for her patients and mentored many individuals entering the medical field. She was known for her warm, cheerful and smiling demeanor, her helpful and generous nature, and her devotion to her family. When her children were young, she was an active member of the PTA and a Cub Scout den mother for Cub Pack 323 in Luling. In her retirement she became active in her local VFW post, serving in several officer positions, and volunteering with the American Red Cross. Ms. Dufresne was preceded in death by her mother and father; five sisters, Cecile D. Faucheux, Anne D. Dennis, Philomene "Toot" D. Falgoust, Agnes D. Barre and Georgette D. Spoonts; two brothers, Claude Dufresne and Amilcar "Noon" Dufresne; and her former husband, Russell D. Giammanco. She is survived by her brother, Ulysse "June" J. Dufresne, of Ponchatoula; son, James R. Giammanco and wife Gloria; daughters, Kay M. Giammanco and husband Sam, and Lia G. Thompson and husband Tim; grandchildren, Ian M. Giammanco, Gina L. Giammanco, Jenny B. Lendle and husband Robert, Lindsay A. Burch, and Jeremy J. Thompson; stepgreat- grandson, Peyton Hicks; expected great-granddaughter, Olivia K. Lendle; many, many beloved nieces and nephews, to whom she was a "favorite aunt" and many, many dear friends. A funeral Mass will be held at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3750 in Luling. Condolences may be offered at www.mem.com.
