He was born Monday, January 25, 1982 in Louisville Kentucky. Surviving are father, Robert E. Durham; mother, Barbara Bryant Durham; brothers, Michael Todd, and Travis Edward Durham; sister and brother-in-law, Michelle Beth and Robert Fulkerson; grandmother, Imogene Durham; nephews, Lucas, Andrew and Austin Durham; nieces, Allisa and Makenna Fulkerson. He was preceded in death by grandparents; Robert E. Durham Sr., Ray H. Bryant and Frances Brian Bryant. He attended Newman High School and graduated from LSU with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as a U.S. Air Force pilot and then was a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. In 1956, he married Nelie Dobson Durham. They have two sons, Dan Reeves "Tracy" Durham III and Hunter Edward Durham. Also survived by six grandchildren, Jessica, Nelie, Hannah, Cody, Daniel and Hunter Ross; a brother, Ronald Durham; and a sister, Donna Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan R. and Melba Reeves Durham; and a brother, Richard P. Durham. He served as president of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, was the first president of the Tangipahoa Parish Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of Florida Parishes Homestead Bank, Southeastern Louisiana University President's Advisory Council and developed the Town and Country Shopping Center. His primary career was owning of Dixie Motors which he founded in 1963. Mr. Durham was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the church board. Memorials requested to Southeastern Louisiana University Development Foundation, the First United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice. He was the loving husband of Bonnie Cosse Durham, devoted father of Hunter Ross, Cody Clay and Daniel Rhett Durham, loving brother of Dan "Tracy" Durham III, beloved son of Nelie Dobson Durham, brother-in-law of Suzanne Chauvin Durham, and uncle of Jessica, Nelie and Hannah Durham. He also is survived by a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan R. Durham II; and grandparents, Dan and Melba Durham and Hunter and Margaret Dobson. In Hammond, he was active in business and the community and was well known for his willingness to help anyone in need. In the past few years, he was on the faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University. He will be missed deeply by his colleagues and students. Max Holmes Durham Jr., a native and longtime resident of Hammond, died after a prolonged illness on Monday, April 18, 2011, in Hammond. Mr. Durham attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., attaining the rank of cadet colonel. He then graduated from Tulane University's College of Arts & Sciences in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Sigma Gamma Epsilon Honor Society and the Adelphons, an inter-fraternal society. In 1952, he married Polly Jean Phelps, a graduate of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following this tenure, he returned to Hammond and pursued a career in geological exploration. He was a member of the Louisiana Mineral Board from 1963 to 1966. In ensuing years, he served in the following capacities: consultant to Merrill Lynch on energy, adviser to Graham Energy Partnerships, Johns-Manville Corp. and Legend Consulting Group and Kaz & Associates. The Durhams resided in New Orleans from 1969 to 1996. During that time, Mr. Durham was active in the business, civic and cultural life of that community. He was a passionate and devoted member of the Tulane University alumni community. In 1998, he received the Tulane Alumni Association's Volunteer of the Year Award. He served as president of the Tulane Alumni Association, co-chairman of the Centennial Committee and was a member of the Tulane College (formerly Arts & Sciences) Dean's Advisory Council, President's Council, Tulane Medical Center Chancellor's Council, Bea Field Alumni House Steering Committee, Executive Education Board of Directors, Green Wave Club and National Fund (Annual Fund) Committee. He established the Katy and Walter H. Brent Memorial Scholarship at the Tulane School of Medicine. He was an active and devoted member of the Episcopal community, serving as senior warden for St. Martin's Church in Metairie, and was a member of the Vestry at New Orleans' Christ Church Cathedral. He was a strong supporter of the New Orleans Opera Association, chairing various fund-raising activities. He was also a member of the board for the Delta Festival Ballet Association. He chaired the Host Reception Committee for the National Republican Party when it held its convention in New Orleans. Preceding him in death were his parents, Rita Brent and Max H. Durham. Survivors include Polly, his wife of 58 years; his three sons, Dr. Joseph R. Durham and wife Marianne, of Chicago; Roger Brent Durham, of Calgary, Canada; and John Holmes Durham and wife Allison, of Dallas. He is additionally survived by two granddaughters, Katherine and Leah Durham, of Chicago, and three grandsons, Dan, presently a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jack and Carter Durham, of Dallas. The funeral service will take place at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, 100 W. Church St., Hammond, on Thursday, April 21, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be in the adjacent parish hall from 1 p.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
