After battling and overcoming cancer, she died from severe case of pneumonia. She is survived by her daughter Debby Evans of New Haven, CT and her son Matthew Evans of Arlington, VA. She is predeceased by her daughter Erin Evans and her husband Harry Evans. She has two grand children by Debby Evans and Richard Burford who have been married 38 years: Anne Burford of West Palm Beach, FL and Evans John Burford of Stoneham, MA. She is also survived by her sisters Bert Tulley of New Orleans and Mary Miller of Winston-Salem, NC, as well as a brother Paul Terrell of Amite, La. She is predeceased by a sister Jane Cowan, formerly of Long Beach, CA and a brother, Lyle Terrell of New Orleans. Ms. Evans was the first Director of the Governor's Office of Women's Services. She was a pioneer in implementing and changing Louisiana laws dealing with family violence, rape, community property, equal credit and displaced homemakers. She also worked to get women elected to political office. For example, she managed the successful campaign of State Treasurer Mary Landrieu and served as advisor to the successful campaigns of Lt. Governor Melinda Schwegmann and Senator Diana Bajoie. Ms. Evans was very active as a community organizer in New Orleans helping to obtain funding for community development projects in different parts of New Orleans such as Treme. Ms. Evans was a champion of social justice and contributor to the communities of New Orleans as recognized by a Proclamation of the City Council of New Orleans. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation and Memorial Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1210 Governor Nicholls Street on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery #2.
