Leonard (Len) C. Fairburn was born in Ponchatoula, Louisiana on May 12, 1940. He passed away at his residence in Lake Almanor, California, after a brave battle with cancer on August 4, 2010. Len grew up in Louisiana and after High School graduation he joined the Marine Corps. As part of his distinguished career in the Marines he was an embassy guard in Vienna and Baghdad and a member of a special guard for President John F. Kennedy when he traveled in Europe for which he received a Presidential Unit Citation. Len served in Vietnam where he led daily patrols into enemy territory and received numerous commendations and medals including: Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medals, Vietnam Meritorious Commendation Galantry Cross and many others. Len spent 5 years at Fort Knox where he was one of very few Marines to receive an Army Commendation Medal for his service there. Len also served at Camp Pendleton, Tustin Air Base and El Toro Air Base in Orange County where his duties included resettlement of VietNam refugees and management of the guards at the Western White House in San Clemente. His last command station was in Japan where he was made a First Sergeant. In 1980 Len returned to civilian life and began a 25 year career in Real Estate, working for Tarbell, Merrill Lynch and Prudential, in Mission Viejo. Len became a broker and was highly regarded and respected for his hard work, honesty, dedication and good character. Len retired from Real Estate in 2006 and with his wife Shirley moved to Lake Almanor, were they had designed and built their dream home. He enjoyed fishing, wildlife observation and the outdoor life style of the Northern California mountains. Len and Shirley became active members of Lake Almanor Community Church, where Len became a deacon. Throughout his life Len was devoted to home, family, community and country. He was a valiant Marine and a strong Christian. Len will be remembered by family, friends and business associates for his serious dedication and integrity as well as his mischievous sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye. Len had many interests and was particularly interested in his Scottish heritage. He will be honored with bagpipes and a military salute at his graveside service. Len is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daugter Tara Westersten and her husband John and his son Jason Fairburn and his wife Kim; and three grandchildren, Drake Leonard Westersten, Dean Raymond Westersten and Stella Jean Fairburn.
