Fairchild passed away at 4:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at her residence in St. Francisville after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a native of Hammond and a retired correctional officer with Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola. She operated the old Brittany Grocery Store for many years, as well as serving as postal clerk at the U.S. Postal Service. Visiting was at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary; Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial in the New River Baptist Church Cemetery, St. Amant, at 1 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Fairchild is survived by a daughter, Barbara F. Hall, and her husband, Billy, of St. Francisville; two sons, James M. Fairchild and his wife, Donna Sheets Fairchild, of Gonzales, and Dennis R. Fairchild of St. Gabriel; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston M. Fairchild; parents, Thomas and Mary Jenkins Hutchinson; five sisters and a brother. Pallbearers will be members of the Louisiana State Penitentiary Honor Guard. The family would like to extend special thanks to the entire staff of St. Joseph's Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion in our time of need. ***************************************************************************
