William Bryant Faust Jr. died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, in Hammond at the age of 89. A retired funeral director with Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, he worked in the funeral business for more than 70 years. A native of Hammond, he spent his early years on a banana plantation in Honduras and lived briefly in Florida before his family returned to Hammond. He worked at Jackson Drugs in Ponchatoula, in the New Orleans shipyards and as an ambulance driver during World War II. In 1945, he earned his mortuary science degree from Gumpton-Jones Institute of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. His first job as a funeral director was at Thomas Funeral Home, in downtown Hammond and which he served as co-manager in the 1950s and early 1960s. He owned and operated Faust CafŽ in the 1960s. In 1970, he joined Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home as associate manager. He continued to work past his retirement until a recent illness. He was named outstanding funeral director for 1992-1993 by the Southeast Louisiana Funeral Directors Association. He was a longtime member of the Hammond Rotary Club, serving as president from 1976-77. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Hammond, where he was an elder and trustee emeritus. He was a past member of the Krewe of Omega and the Krewe of Caesar. He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, William B. Faust III and Cheryl of Metairie, John M. "Jim" Faust and Lorraine of Hammond, Thomas L. Faust and Donna of Tupelo, Miss., and Richard M. Faust and Cathy of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William B. Faust Jr. and Ruby Butler Faust; wife, Dorothy McIntyre Faust; brother, Neil M. Faust; and grandson, Wesley Brent Faust.
