Roy J. Favret Sr., the "grey fox," born Sept. 8, 1929, and a longtime resident of New Orleans who in recent years resided in Hammond, departed from our world on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. All who knew of Roy came to the realization that he "loved to work and loved to play hard." He was a longtime employee of the Fair Grounds Corp. where he served as track superintendent and which he always held dearly in his heart. In recent years, he was employed by several thoroughbred race tracks as a consultant at Aksarben Race Track in Nebraska, Oaklawn Race Track in Arkansas and others. In his earlier years, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. Preceded in death by his parents, David and Alice Foote Favret; siblings, David J. Favret, Lloyd Favret, Merle Favret and Alice Favret Tamburo; and two loving wives, Zola Senac Favret and Flora Drakey Favret. Survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Alice B. Favret; and children, Roy Jr., Christina, Sandra, Greg, Steve, Wilson, and Malynda. He was Poppa Roy to 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 9, at 11 a.m. from the chapel at Jacob Schoen Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
