News of Death of Father Joachim Fortea Reaches Here This Week
Pastor of Catholic Church Here For Sixteen Years Dies in Manila on January 7th

News of the death of the Rev. Father Joachim Fortea on January 7th, at Manila, 
Phillipine (sic) Islands, was received here with regret this week.  He had been 
pastor of the St. Helena Catholic church here for sixteen years and during that 
time had won the love and respect of all the town as well as his parishioners.   
In August of last year he was sent to the Phillipine Islands to take charge as 
Superior at the St. Gregory Sanctuary there.  His death was sudden, following a 
stroke that came shortly after he had gone from the school to a home back in the 
mountains for a rest.  News reached here by letter from Father Fuente formerly of 
Independence, who went to Manila with Father Joachim.  Requiem mass was held in 
his honor, Monday morning, at the St. Helena Catholic church here, bu the present 
pastor, Rev. Father John Baverso.
