Fortenberry died in her sleep Saturday night. Funeral services were held Monday from the First Baptist Church. The remains were taken to Hurricane, Miss. for burial with the Thomas Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were her two nephews and her five brothers-in-law. Mrs. Fortenberry, the former Etta Mae McKenzie, was born in Hurricane, Miss. community near Columbia in 1890. She was one of twelve children, ten of which survive. She was married to Mr. Fortenberry 43 years ago and had been a resident of Hammond for the past 28 years. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Carroll and Robert L. Fortenberry of Hammond; two daughters, Mrs. W. A. Ivison of Hammond and Mrs. Wesley W. Fussell of San Diego, CA; her brother's child, Jackie McKenzie, whom she reared from childhood; her grandson, Bobby Francis, who made his home with her; four brothers, Claude, Jesse, Eugene and Howard McKenzie, all of Mississippi; and by six sisters; Mrs. F. A native of Amite and a longtime resident of Mobile, Ala., he passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at age 88. Born June 18, 1921, he served his country as a B-24 pilot in the 380th Bomb Group during World War II. He received an engineering degree from LSU and worked until his retirement for International Paper. He was an ordained elder and a longtime member of Cottage Hill Presbyterian Church, serving God faithfully for his entire life. W.M. Fortenberry was preceded in death by his parents, William Madison Fortenberry and Sallie Ann Newton Fortenberry; and a daughter, Susanne Elizabeth Wood. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara Horton Fortenberry; a brother, J. Robert Fortenberry, of Amite; children, Pamela Ellen and husband Darren Mendel, Memphis Tenn., William Madison Fortenberry Jr., Kingsport Tenn., Nancy Fortenberry Titko, of Mobile, Ala., Robert Horton and wife Martha Fortenberry, Pace Fla.; son-in-law, George Charles Wood; grandchildren Chad, Lisa, Jessica and David Wood, J.L.
