Dr. Francis Gary Fournet, Jr. passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Mississippi Veterans' Home in Oxford Mississippi. Dr. Fournet was a native of Natchitoches, Louisiana, born on March 23, 1923. Dr. Fournet is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn Delcourt Fournet and five daughters: Marilyn Michele Fournet of Baton Rouge; Catherine Fournet Baker and her husband Terry of Jacksonville, Florida, Cynthia Fournet Kahler and her husband Buddy of Oxford, Mississippi; Stephanie Fournet Spillane and her husband Jimmy of Pleasanton, California, and Anne-Marie Fournet Daniels and her husband Mark of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by his sister, Frances Mae Outland, of Natchitoches. Dr. Fournet was blessed with five granddaughters, one grandson, and three great grandsons. He delighted in being with his children and their families. Dr. Fournet served in World War II and was stationed in the European and Pacific theaters. He returned after the war and finished his degrees at LSU. Dr. Fournet was a dedicated teacher who had over thirty years of experience in education. He taught first at Ponchatoula High School and then taught mathematics at Southeastern Louisiana University for over tweny years; he also taught at St. Paul Catholic High School and St. Ben Catholic Seminary. Dr. Fournet loved teaching and was an inspiration to generations of students. He was an avid golfer. He had a gentle, kind spirit and was a compassionate friend to all he met. Visitation will be at Harry McKneely and Son, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd., Hammond, Louisiana, on Thursday, September 27, 2012, from 6 pm to 9 p.m. and from 8 am to 10 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Dutch Schanzbach. Interment to follow in Rose Memorial Cemetery Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to the Mississippi Veterans Home, Stand Behind Campaign, 120 Veterans Drive, Oxford, MS 38655.
