Lucille Jennings Freeman was born in 1896 - the seventh of 11 children born to Josephine Preston Jennings and Riley Jennings. The family lived in St. Helena Parish near Spring Branch on a large farm owned by the great-grandfather of former 21st Judicial District Attorney Duncan Kemp. The large family lived off the land cutting trees to make their log house, farming the land and hunting for their meat. What the land couldn't provide they obtained through trade, Freeman said in an interview with The Daily Star last fall. Freeman lived through an era where meat was preserved in the ground, clothes were boiled and pounded and church was held in a clearing on the land. She rejoiced when washboards came out and danced through the her house when she was 70 years old and running water allowed her to shut the door to her outhouse permanently. She married John Freeman in the mid-1910s and settled in the Montpelier area. Never having children of their own, the Freemans adopted several children. After her house burned down in 1994, she moved into the Kentwood Manor Nursing Home. She is survived by two sons, Freddie Freeman and Johnny Russell, both of Amite; three daughters, Elnora Washington of Buffalo, N.Y., Lizzie Russell Quillin of Baton Rouge and Alice Freeman Cooper of Amite; and 12 grandchildren.
