Survived by her husband, Joseph Harvey Gaines Jr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph H. Gaines III, M.D., and Jane Ann Gaines; granddaughters, Melanie Gaines Tatum and Jennifer Gaines Drez; grandsons, Bryant W. Gaines and J. Damon Gaines; and a great-granddaughter and great-grandsons, Laura Lindsay Tatum, Richard Harvey Claiborne Tatum, B. Wiley Gaines II, Parker Stewart Gaines and David J. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church of Hammond. She was dearly loved by all her family, who will miss her immensely. Joseph Harvey Gaines Jr., 87, the most special husband, father and grand- father, went to be with our Lord on Monday, July 26, 2004. Mr. Gaines was born Oct. 23, 1916, in New Orleans, to Fannie Mae and Joseph Harvey Gaines Sr. After graduating from Amite High School, he attended Delgado Junior College, where he majored in electrical engineering. In 1940, he married the love of his life, Annette Dolhonde. Together they moved to Baton Rouge, where he joined Esso Oil Refineries. In the course of 38 years, Mr. Gaines rose to the position of mechanical supervisor of refinery electrical systems, where he had many close friends. In 1942, he and Annette welcomed their first and only child, Joe, who was their greatest joy and pride. After residing in Baton Rouge for 45 years, they made their home in Hammond, where they were members of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. After his wife's death in 2002, Mr. Gaines moved to Fort Worth, Texas, to be near his son and family, where he joined Holy Family Catholic Church. Mr. Gaines enjoyed gardening, woodwork, traveling with his wife and grandchildren, working with his son and grandsons on any and every project and spending as much time as possible with his family and friends, whom he loved dearly. Mr. Gaines and his son, Joe, shared an uncommon bond. They were the deepest of friends. Joe was his father's heart and soul. Mr. Gaines was also a constant inspiration to his family through his deep faith, perseverance, ingenuity and because he lived a life without regrets, always treating those around him with kindness, affection and respect. He was a gentleman without peer, always selfless, putting others needs always before his own. He was dearly loved by his family and will be missed immensely. Mr. Gaines is survived by his son, Joseph Harvey Gaines III, M.D.; daughter-in-law, Jane Ann Gaines; grandchildren, Melanie Gaines Tatum and husband Dan, Bryant Gaines and wife Michelle, Damon Gaines and wife Lisa and Jennifer Gaines Drez and husband David III; and great-grandchildren, Laura Lindsay Tatum, Richard Tatum, Wiley Gaines, Parker Gaines, David Drez IV, Phillip Drez and Cole Gaines. Mr. Gaines was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annette; sister, Marion D. Gaines; and brother, James I. Gaines. A resident of San Antonio, and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Latice was a gentle spirit who loved and valued family. Her beautiful smile and great sense of humor were treasures to those who knew her. Her untimely death occurred on Nov. 27, shortly after arriving in Baton Rouge to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family. She was the oldest of two siblings and was educated in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system and Southern University Laboratory School, from which she was a 1982 graduate. She furthered her education at Southern University in Baton Rouge. She was baptized by the late J.R. Williams at Elm Grove Baptist Church and attended church on a regular basis in her young adulthood. She attended Cornerstone Ministries in San Antonio.
