Rex B. Garon, 76, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at his home in Ponchatoula. Although his family was most important in his life, he also enjoyed fishing and, most recently, playing golf. Mr. Rex was a member of Old Zion Hill Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, was a master mason of the Independence Masonic Lodge 458 and was a member of the Albany Masonic Lodge 466. He was a longtime music director for Old Zion Hill Baptist Church and a music director for seven years for Independence First Baptist Church. Mr. Rex proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He is survived by his devoted wife, Catherine Garon; children, Duane Garon and wife Vickie, Dale Garon, Peggy Garon, Lori Garon, Tim Garon and wife Laura, and Richard Garon and wife Monette; along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Rex was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen Garon; second wife, Helen Hoover-Garon; siblings, Ivy Garon, Albert Garon and Mable Garon; father, Frank Garon; and mother, Velma Blount and her husband, C.D. Preceded in death by a son, Matthew Robert Populis; father, Hulon Populis; paternal grandparents, Cassie and Luetta Reid Populis; maternal grandparents, John F. and Leonile Rome Snowden; an aunt, Flora Snowden; and an uncle, John F. Snowden. Robin had a rare disease called myelodyplasia which is in the leukemia family of diseases. It causes severe anemia and prevents the bone marrow from producing red blood cells. After over a year of battling the disease, she lost a lot of weight and became very frail and weak.
