At the blessed age of 84 and a native of Amite County, Mississippi, Nina passed away Friday, August 8, 2008 at her residence in Hammond. After retiring from the Hammond Developmental Center, she found great satisfaction in sitting with the elderly. Nina loved gardening and tending to her flowers. She was known for her contagious laugh, always telling stories to anyone who would listen. Nina attended First Baptist Church in Independence. She is survived by two devoted daughters, Faye Woods and her husband, William of Woodville, Mississippi and Evelyn Uli of Hammond, Louisiana. Also surviving her are three supporting sons, Gene Halford and wife, Sunji of Texas, Kenneth Callender and wife, Mary Ann of Rockdale, Texas and Bobby Callender and wife Shelley of Tickfaw, Louisiana. She was born in Erwinville, Pointe Coupee Parish, Dec. 14, 1914. She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, and a master's degree in education from LSU. She had completed all but a few hours toward her doctorate, but decided to retire and travel with her husband. She met and married Joe T. Gill in 1940 and moved to Hammond, where she resided for the past 61 years. She taught school for about five years in Independence before her marriage. She started teaching at Southeastern Louisiana University Laboratory School in 1946, and had a 40-year teaching career. She retired in 1976 from Southeastern Louisiana University as professor emeritus of library science. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Thomas Gill; three sisters, Norlie Maddox, Mary Hayes and Gertrude Howson; and two brothers, Frank Chustz and Dr. James Chustz. She is survived by two nephews, Roger Chustz and Steve Chustz; four nieces, Susan Chustz Brooks, Sandra Chustz Spencer, Sally Chustz Todd and Sherry Chustz Pace; six great-nieces and two great- nephews.
