She passed away at her home with her loving husband, John, at her side. Liz was born April 28, 1943, in Covington, Ky., and grew up in the nearby small town of Walton. Reports are that beginning at an early age, she always strove for excellence in every undertaking. She was an excellent student and graduated valedictorian of her class at Walton-Verona High School in 1961. She was also very active in the Walton First Christian Church, where she remained faithful throughout her life. Liz next graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in home economics. She taught home economics in a high school in Ohio for a few years and decided, in the late 1960s, to move to the Washington, D.C., area to further her education. She earned a master's degree in textile technology from the University of Maryland. She joined the Federal Trade Commission, as a textile technologist, in the flammability area, and when the Consumer Product Safety Commission was formed in 1973, she joined that agency. Liz's penchant for organization was soon apparent, and she ultimately became responsible for coordinating the agency's efforts in the area of flammability in children's sleepwear. During her federal career, she received many awards and recognition for her talents. She was exceptional in developing the agency's budgets for the programs for which she was responsible. It was during her career at CPSC that she met her husband, John, and they were married Aug. 6, 1981. Although she was a very hard worker, Liz still took time to play. She was an avid snow skier, while John was a golfer. She tried to teach John to snow ski and watched in horror as he almost destroyed himself on the slopes. It was then that she decided to give up skiing and take up golf, which was something less dangerous for her husband. Liz retired from the federal government in 1994, and she and John decided to move back home to Hammond where he grew up. They decided that the best way to become integrated into the community was to join several organizations. They became members of the Oak Knoll Country Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Krewe of Omega and the First Christian Church in Hammond. Liz also became a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Within a short time Liz's organizational skills became apparent. As a Red Cross volunteer she became secretary of the Leadership Council for Tangipahoa Parish and was chairwoman for fund raisers in 1996 and 1997, which were reported to be the most successful ever held in the parish. In the Krewe of Omega, Liz served on the board and became treasurer, a position she held for six years. In the First Christian Church, she also served as treasurer for more than six years, and found time to organize the church's library and to start a Sunday school for intermediate children. While part of the Krewe of Omega, Liz grew quite fond of Mardi Gras activities, and in 1999, she and John were King and Queen Omega XIII. Liz always viewed this experience as one of the highlights of her move to Hammond. She remained part of the Krewe as "Past Royalty" up until her death. Liz loved life, and was always recognized as a warm and generous person. She had a ready smile, and at parties, it was not unusual for her to rise up, grab the microphone, and belt out "Let me entertain you!" She loved to "pass a good time," but she was also deeply involved in her religious faith. It was this faith that kept her going during the ordeal of the last 14 months of chemotherapy, radiation etc. Her husband, John, described her loss as leaving him half a man. She will be missed by her family, her friends and indeed, the community. Liz was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Helen Jones, who were of Walton. She is survived by her loving husband, John; her sisters, Patsy Slusher and spouse Herman, Nancy Vest and spouse Kerry, Evelyn Richard and spouse Raymond. She is also survived by her brother, Robert and spouse June; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom live in the northern Kentucky area. Liz is also survived by the following stepchildren from John's first marriage, Susan Snider, of Nashville, Tenn., Cheryl Kennedy and spouse William, of Linden, Va., Bret Gomilla and spouse Joni, of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Gina Shea and spouse Bill, of Copley, Ohio, and Kevin Gomilla and spouse Michelle, of Panama City, Fla. We also owe a profound sense of gratitude to Judd E. Patten, M.D., Ph.D., and the oncology staff at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. Their expertise, compassion and heroic efforts to stem the spread of Liz's cancer are deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. Funeral at First Christian Church, 305 E.
