He was 77, a native and resident of Independence. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visitation was at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home chapel, Hammond, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. He was a member of Millwright and Machinery Erectors Union Local No. 720 in Baton Rouge and New Hope Baptist Church. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 5/23/2008 GOODWIN, JEWELL JOYCE WAGNER A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Jewell passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and savior on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. She was 80, a native of Doyle and a resident of Independence for the past 62 years. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary for more than 30 years and continued to attend services until her death. Jewell was known for the heart-filled service she gave throughout her lifetime to her family and her God. She touched the lives of all who knew her and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Debra "Debbie" Lynn Goodwin and Johnny Paul Robertson, of Independence; three special grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Robertson Watts and husband Jeffery Paul, of Hammond, and Brittany Lynn Robertson and Johnny "Jay" Paul Robertson II, both of Independence; and a great-grandchild, Landon Paul Watts, of Hammond. Jewell also leaves behind her sister Yvonne Wagner and her husband, Lee Alton McDonald, of Holden; along with her uncle, Lloyd Lott, of Denham Springs. Many nieces and nephews will remember their aunt Jewell. Jewell was married for 52 years to Elliott John Goodwin, who passed away in 1999, also on May 20. As well as her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katelyn Delaine Robertson; parents, Kinchen and Levada Lott Wagner; brothers, Dewy and Luke Wagner; and a sister, Norma Lee Wagner Roberts. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service at New Hope Baptist Church, north of Albany, on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Officiating the religious service will be the Rev. Tommy Hicks, the Rev. Paul Taylor and the Rev. Wilmer Goodwin. Interment in Bankston Cemetery. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and to the wonderful staff of Hood Home Health in Amite for the loving care and kindness shown to Ms. Jewell during her illness.
