Essie Mae Simmons Graham was born in Tangipahoa Parish on April 9, 1924, the daughter of Luther and Ella Eldridge Simmons. She graduated from Chesbrough High School in 1940 and from Paramour School of Cosmetology in New Orleans in 1941. She married Thomas Edward Graham Sr. on Sept. 7, 1943. For many years Essie lived in Centreville, where she along with two sisters were operators of the Three Sisters Beauty Salon. She was a member of the National Cosmetology Association and was employed for 17 years at Centreville Health Care as a resident cosmetologist. She held valid cosmetology licenses in Mississippi and Louisiana until her death. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Dianne Graham Sanders and Max of Haleyville, Ala., Beverly Graham Miller and Nix of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Thomas Edward Jr. and Susan Graham of Dallas; five grandchildren, Lance and wife Christy Sanders, and Miranda Miller Little and husband Johnny, all of Alabama, Matthew and wife Nena Graham of Mississippi, Rebekah and John Samuel Graham, both of Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Emmi Jaide Sanders of Alabama. Mr. Graham was a native of Spring Creek, a former resident of Baton Rouge, and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1959. He graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1949 and was captain of the 1949 State Champion track team. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of Joe Graham American Legion Post 119 in Gulfport. He retired as district manager from Commercial Credit after 37 years of service. For several years, he coached Little League and Pony League baseball in Gulfport. He was a former member of the BRHS Alumni Association and Sunkist Country Club of Biloxi. Attending LSU on a track scholarship, Mr. Graham was a sprinter and record holder on the 1951 SEC Track Championship Team. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Ross Graham; parents, John A. and Orie Booty Graham; and two brothers, A. Kennon and Stanley S. Graham. She was 89, a native of St. Louis, She was a founder and president of the American Needlepoint Guild and won national and international prizes for her needlepoint. She also served on boards of the National and International American Needlepoint Guilds and frequently served as a judge in their competitions. She served on the boards of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Orleans Gallery, the Repertory Theatre, the St. Tammany Heart Association and the State Board of the Louisiana Council of Music and the Performing Arts. A chair in fine arts at Tulane University is named in her honor. Pieces of her needlework appear in the Peace Rug at the United Nations Building, the Bird and Flower Rug at the Chicago Botanical Garden,the State Seal of Louisiana in the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, D.C., and in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
