HERBERT WAYNE Dr. Herbert Wayne Gregory, 92, passed away at his home in Black Mountain, NC on Sunday, August 25, 2013, with his family by his side. He is pre- deceased by his parents, Leonard Curtis and Leona Wagner Gregory and one brother, James Edward Gregory. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Jeannette Spainhour Gregory; Children, Dr. Wayne Porter Gregory, Portland, OR; Richard and Anne Gregory Authement, Ponchatoula, LA. Terri Gouedy Gregory, Monmouth, OR; two brothers, Leroy C. Gregory, Loudon, TN., and Lanny L. Gregory, Gallatin, TN.; also, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, 4 nieces, and one nephew. Dr. Gregory was raised in Calhoun City, Miss. He received advanced degrees from the University of Mississippi, and devoted his life to the advancement of the teaching profession. He worked with NCATE and SASC in evaluating and improving the profession of teaching in public schools and colleges. Dr. Gregory served in the 8th Air Force in WWII and retired from Southeastern Louisiana University as Professor Emeritus, Department of Student Teaching. A highlight of his tenure there was his involvement in the planning and construction of the innovative Teacher Education Center, which incorporated the Lab School and education offices. During his years in Hammond, he was a deacon at two Baptist churches, active in the Rotary Club, and grew roses that he shared with the community. Following retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Gregory have resided in Black Mountain, North Carolina for the past 20 years. He has served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, on the Board of Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries, and as a volunteer at the Black Mountain Welcome Center. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 1:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 PM. Rev. Dr. David Rayburn will officiate. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Hammonds of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Joann Gregory of Independence; two sons, Jim Gregory of Independence and Ronnie Gregory of Hammond; one sister, Vaughnten Norton of Laurel, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grand- children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Rosie Huff Thornton; a daughter, Janey Carol Gregory; two sisters, Ordell Newcomb and Winnie Mae Perritt; and one brother, Lester Thornton. Visitation will be Wednesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, Laurel, Miss., from 5 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m., and burial will be at Myrick Cemetery in Jones County, Miss.
