Elmer W. "Griff" Griffith Jr. passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, in Fallbrook, Calif. He was born in Mississippi on Nov. 14, 1925, to Bessy (Delaughter) and Elmer W. Griffith Sr. He was a retired locksmith and master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1962 from which he retired with honors including a Purple Heart Medal. Griff was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanzie Griffith-Hilley and Brennice Griffith-Harkins; and a son, Robert Griffith. He is survived by a sister, Bonnie Griffith- Strickland, of Kentwood; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Fred Wierson, of Fallbrook; daughter, Paula Diaz and family; two granddaughters from his son; and a half sister, Helen Courtney, of Monroe. He was 59 and a native of Tylertown, Miss. Visitation at First Pentecostal Church, Roseland, from 6 p.m. Tuesday until religious services at 1 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. William Skipper. He was born in St. Albans, West Virginia on July 25, 1929 and proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ken retired from Union Carbide Corporation where he was employed for 33 years. Ken will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Anita "Ann" Thaxton Griffith; son and daughter- in-law, Mike and Robin Griffith of Kemah, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Calvin Boehm of Pumpkin Center, Jan and Tom Claus of Spring, Texas; grandchildren, Shea Griffith and wife Brandi, Shanie Griffith Dickens and husband Johnny, Megan Boehm, Matthew, Michael and Nathan Claus; great-grandchildren, Sydni Griffith and Peyton Dickens. He is also survived by his sisters, Jewell Haddad of Charleston, West Virginia, Phyllis Griffith of South Charleston, West Virginia, Patty Dimock of Venice, Florida, Jeanette Riech of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Carley Means of Severna Park, Maryland; one brother, Jack Griffith of Denton, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Ken in death were his parents, James K. and Bremen Griffith; sisters, Betty Riling and Faye Peterson; brother, Doug Griffith. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that visiting hours be observed Wednesday, March 3rd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the funeral service time. Rev. Pete Charpentier will officiate the services and entombment will follow in Rose Memorial Mausoleum.
