He was a retired U.S. Army sergeant first class and a Pinkerton security guard. He served in Korea, Germany, Thailand and the United States. He is survived by his wife, Erika Guthrie; one son, Mike Guthrie of New Orleans; one brother, Terry Guthrie of LaPlace; two sisters, Billie Van Huss and Effie Smith, both of New Orleans; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, R.S. Guthrie.
