She was 63, born Saturday, Feb. 1, 1942, in New Orleans, to the late Brewer Benham Thompson and the late Thelma Inez Addison. She is survived by her husband, John William Hammer Jr., Ponchatoula; son, John W. Hammer III, Ponchatoula; daughter, Jane Ellen Hammer Bankston, Ponchatoula; two grandsons, Casey Dean Hammer and Nicholas Gage Bankston; granddaughter, Danielle Blythe Bankston; and nephew, Vernon Martin Jr., Virginia Beach, Va. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon Martin Sr.; and parents. She had 11 years of community service as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America, was a leader with Troop 44 for 10 years and received numerous awards and recognition for her devoted service. Visitation at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 28. Visitation at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, until religious service at 10 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Charles Bigner of French Corner Baptist Church. Mr. John William Hammer Jr., 74 years old, passed away on April 1, 2011, at his residence in Ponchatoula, LA. A native of Uptown New Orleans, LA, he was born on October 2, 1936, son of the late John William Hammer Sr. and Alma Scarpero Hammer. Mr. Hammer was a parishioner of St. Frances of Assisi Church. He attended Holy Cross High School and Loyola College. He retired from Union Carbide after over 30 years of service. He was a US Navy Veteran having served aboard the USS Woodson Reserve Escort Squadron Four. Surviving are his son, John William Hammer III, daughter & son-in-law, Jane Ellen Hammer Bankston and Chad Bankston, and his grandchildren, Casey Hammer, Nicholas Bankston, and Danielle Bankston. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Jane Thompson Hammer. Friends will be received on Monday, April 4, 2011 from 8:30 am until 10:30 am at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in the Maurepas Cemetery in Maurepas, LA.
