Ponchatoula - Vernon Samuel Haney Sr., 71, died Friday, June 9, 2000, in St. Tammany Parish Hospital. He was a lieutenant at the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Department and a member of the Louisiana Association of Sheriffs. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Haney, Ponchatoula; four daughters, Portia Elly, New Orleans, Barbara Jackson, Ponchatoula, Gaynell Jenkins and LaVern Payton, both of San Francisco; two sons, Vernon S. Haney Jr., San Francisco, and Darris Haney, Ponchatoula; one sister, Hazel Young, Ponchatoula; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His sister, Dorothy McKay; his son. Larry Haney; and a grandson preceded him in death. Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tasker's AME Zion Church. The Rev. Estell Littlejohn will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ponchatoula Community Center. Burial will be in Ponchatoula Cemetery. N.A.
