COL. DONALD MCCOY, SR. A caring, thoughtful husband, father, grandfather and brother, he died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at his home with his wife by his side. He was a native of Kentwood and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He was 84 years old and a retiree of Exxon Co. USA with 32 years of service. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the Amphibian Engineers and served in the Southwest Pacific, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff School and re-tired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel in 1971. While in the local Army Reserve, he was attached to the 4157 U.S.A.R. School as operations officer. A gifted craftsman and a perfectionist, his skill and patience were evident in every project he undertook. He possessed an inquisitive mind and relished acquiring knowledge on topics unfamiliar to him. He was a humongous reader with a preference for history that correlated with his interest in maps. A talented amateur photographer, he was also an enthusiastic gardener who never ceased to marvel at the beauty of nature. He believed in supporting LSU athletically and academically, and in 1997, endowed a professorship of engineering at LSU. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Effie Copponex Hardy; a daughter, Dr. Marcia Lynn Hardy, St. Gabriel; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Donald McCoy (Marilyn Jones) Hardy Jr., Lakewood, Colo.; three grandchildren, Donald Christopher Hardy, Golden, Colo., Jennifer Lynn Hardy, Valley Village, Calif., and Leah Kathryn Hardy, New York, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John Edward and Dr. Willene Hardy, Baton Rouge; sisters-in-law, Bernice Barry and Mrs. James (Patricia) Hannie, both of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. Farley (Mary Ellen "Noonie") Day of Claremont, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Frederick Copponex, Baton Rouge; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Roger Barlow and Mary McCoy Hardy; and three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Marjorie and Wally Wells, Mrs. Barker (Shirley) Killgore, Mrs. Frederick (Catherine) Copponex and John "Buddy" Copponex.
