Her family later moved to West Baton Rouge Parish. After graduating from Port Allen High School in 1939, she attended and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake Nursing School. She began her military service in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. After basic training, she spent a year in Hot Springs, Ark., working at the Army Navy Hospital. On VE Day, she boarded a ship in Los Angeles and traveled to Calcutta, India, to join the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. During this time, she worked in hospitals in Jorhat and Calcutta. After the war, she returned home and worked for several years as a surgical nurse at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. After her marriage to Thomas, Gladys became a homemaker and cared for her family. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home in Port Allen on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting will continue at Holy Family Catholic Church, Port Allen, on Monday from 8:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Greg Daigle. Interment will be with her husband in Port Hudson National Cemetery. She is survived by three children and their spouses, James Thomas Harkins and wife Diane Funderburk Harkins, Cynthia "Cindy" Harkins Lowe and husband Gregory T. Lowe, and Darleen Harkins Deshautel and husband Carl L. Deshautel, all of Port Allen; eight grand- children, Shonda Rene Harkins Boudet and husband Bryan, of Baton Rouge, Regina Diane Harkins Prince and husband Chris, of Russellville, Ark., Dr. Heather Christina Harkins Barroso and husband Juan, of Atlanta, Kate Elizabeth Deshautel Pitre and husband T.J., of Central, Megan Claire Lowe and Luke Thomas Lowe, both of Port Allen, Sarah Lyn Deshautel of Baton Rouge, and Rylea Anne Deshautel, of Hammond; and seven great-grandchildren, Blaze Alexander Deshautel, James Paul Boudet, Cooper Nicholas Boudet, Tucker Joseph Pitre, Leila Diane Barroso, Reese Olivia Prince and Kaylyn Renee Taylor. She is also survived by two sisters, MaeBelle Felps Alleman and Iris Lottie Felps Black, both of Port Allen. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ora Wunstel Felps; husband, Thomas Francis Harkins; and a sister, Ollie Morales Matthews. Pallbearers will be Luke Lowe, Bryan Boudet, Charles Black, Terry Morales, Chuck Blair, Bob and Chris Neyland. Honorary pallbearer is Blaze Deshautel. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and American Legion McKinnley Bourg Post 160 and Auxiliary in Port Allen. Gladys also served as a commissioner during the Bicentennial Celebration. One of her favorite pastimes was crocheting and creating gifts for many family members and friends.
